Pediatric Therapy in Dawson County

Dawson County is the smallest of the four counties we serve and the one with the thinnest local provision. There is one incorporated city, Dawsonville, and the county’s population is spread widely enough that a specialist pediatric clinic has never been sustainable inside it. Families needing speech, occupational, physical, feeding or ABA therapy travel, and the natural direction of travel is south down Highway 400 toward Cumming.

That distance changes how we plan a case. A weekly commitment from north of Dawsonville is a real ask, so we would rather agree an honest frequency you can sustain for a year, with a strong home program in between, than book an ambitious schedule that collapses by the second month. Where a lower frequency will genuinely not achieve the goal, we will say so plainly rather than let a family drive for something that was never going to work.

Where a Dawson County family starts

Georgia hands responsibility for a child with a developmental concern to two different public systems, and which one you deal with depends on your child’s age rather than on what is going on with them. Both are free. Which office you call depends on the county you live in, and Dawson County is not routed the same way as every county around it.

Birth to age 3: Babies Can’t Wait, District 2 Public Health

Dawson County shares District 2 Public Health with Forsyth, Hall, Lumpkin and nine other northeast Georgia counties, administered from Gainesville. The eligibility evaluation and service coordination are free and eligibility is not income based. Because Dawson and Forsyth sit in the same district, a family moving between the two counties keeps the same early intervention system, which is not true of a move into Cherokee.

Age 3 through 21: Dawson County Schools, Preschool Program

Dawson County Schools runs a preschool program for children aged three to five through its exceptional student services department. After a referral the preschool department contacts the family to arrange a screening across all five developmental areas, meaning communication, motor, adaptive, social and emotional, and cognitive. Screenings can be done at the school or at the Dawson County daycare or pre-k the child already attends. If the screening suggests a delay, the family is asked to consent to a fuller evaluation.

Where private therapy fits

Private therapy is not an alternative to either of those systems and we do not ask families to choose. Public programs are bound by eligibility rules written around educational impact, which means a child can be visibly struggling and still not qualify, or qualify for far less frequency than their goals need. Families come to us to start before a public evaluation is scheduled, to add frequency alongside school services, to cover disciplines the school does not provide, or to keep going through the summer. With your permission we will coordinate directly with a school therapist or a service coordinator so the two plans reinforce each other instead of pulling in opposite directions.
