Pediatric Therapy in North Fulton County
North Fulton has no shortage of pediatric providers. It has a shortage of openings. Families come north to us because we can start, and because every discipline is in one building rather than three.
North Fulton is the most competitive part of our service area and the one where families arrive with the most homework already done. They have usually called several clinics, been quoted a waitlist by each, and come up Highway 400 because we could see them sooner or because they were tired of driving to a different building for every discipline.
The distinguishing question in North Fulton is rarely whether therapy is available. It is whether a family can get one team that talks to itself. A child who sees a speech-language pathologist at one practice, an occupational therapist at another and a behavior analyst at a third ends up with three plans that were never reconciled. Ours are written by clinicians who share a building, a record and a hallway conversation.
Where a North Fulton family starts
Georgia hands responsibility for a child with a developmental concern to two different public systems, and which one you deal with depends on your child’s age rather than on what is going on with them. Both are free. Which office you call depends on the county you live in, and North Fulton is not routed the same way as every county around it.
Birth to age 3: Babies Can’t Wait, Fulton County Board of Health
Fulton County runs its own board of health rather than sitting inside a multi-county district, so North Fulton families go through the Fulton County Board of Health for Babies Can’t Wait. The program serves infants and toddlers under three with developmental delays or disabilities, and the evaluation that determines eligibility and scope of services is free of charge.

Age 3 through 21: Fulton County Schools, Child Find and Early Childhood Special Education
Alpharetta, Milton, Johns Creek, Roswell and Mountain Park are all served by Fulton County Schools rather than by city school systems, so the referral desk is the same wherever in North Fulton you live. Child Find covers children from birth to 21 suspected of having a disability, and the preschool special education process can begin as a child approaches their third birthday and runs through the summer before they are age eligible for kindergarten. Services are free to students living in the district.

Where private therapy fits
Private therapy is not an alternative to either of those systems and we do not ask families to choose. Public programs are bound by eligibility rules written around educational impact, which means a child can be visibly struggling and still not qualify, or qualify for far less frequency than their goals need. Families come to us to start before a public evaluation is scheduled, to add frequency alongside school services, to cover disciplines the school does not provide, or to keep going through the summer. With your permission we will coordinate directly with a school therapist or a service coordinator so the two plans reinforce each other instead of pulling in opposite directions.

North Fulton questions we get asked
Why drive north when there are clinics in Alpharetta?
For some families there is no reason to, and we will say so. The two reasons families give us are availability and consolidation. If the local waitlist means starting in four months, starting now somewhere twenty minutes further out is usually the better trade for a young child. And if your child needs two or three disciplines, one building beats three calendars.
Do city limits change which school system we deal with?
Not in North Fulton. Alpharetta, Milton, Johns Creek, Roswell and Mountain Park are all served by Fulton County Schools rather than by independent city systems, so the Child Find and preschool special education route is the same across all of them. That is different from some metro Atlanta counties, where a city system runs its own special education referrals.
We already have an IEP through Fulton County Schools. Do we still need private therapy?
Not necessarily, and it is worth understanding what the IEP is actually delivering before adding anything. School services are scoped to educational access, which sets both what gets targeted and how much of it a child receives. Where families add private therapy it is usually for one of three reasons: a goal the school does not consider educationally relevant, a frequency below what the goal needs, or the summer gap. Bring the IEP to the evaluation and we will tell you plainly whether we would be adding anything.
Can we be seen after school or after work?
Late afternoon is the most contested part of the schedule everywhere in pediatric therapy, and North Fulton families feel that hardest because they are driving in traffic to get here. Ask about it directly at intake rather than assuming. Availability moves as caseloads turn over, and being on the list for a slot that suits you is the way to get one.
