Our home county
Our clinic is in Cumming, so Forsyth County families are not driving to us, they are driving past us. Speech, occupational, physical, feeding and ABA therapy plus evaluations, all under one roof, for children from birth to 21.
Joy Therapy and Learning Center sits at 1715 Friendship Circle in Cumming, which makes Forsyth County our home county rather than an outlying service area. Most of the families on our caseload live here. It also means we see the same patterns repeatedly: the pediatric practices that refer early and the ones that wait, the preschools that flag a concern before a parent has noticed it, and the point in the school year when the county’s evaluation queue gets long.
Forsyth County has exactly one incorporated city, Cumming, and the rest of the county is unincorporated. Practically that means addresses across south Forsyth, Coal Mountain, Matt and the Lake Lanier side of the county all carry a Cumming mailing address without being anywhere near the square. We mention it because it confuses insurance forms and school zoning more often than it confuses parents.
Georgia hands responsibility for a child with a developmental concern to two different public systems, and which one you deal with depends on your child’s age rather than on what is going on with them. Both are free. Which office you call depends on the county you live in, and Forsyth County is not routed the same way as every county around it.
Forsyth County falls under District 2 Public Health, headquartered in Gainesville, which runs Babies Can’t Wait for thirteen northeast Georgia counties. Evaluation to determine eligibility and service coordination are free, and eligibility is not based on income. Any parent can refer their own child; you do not need a pediatrician to do it for you.

At three, responsibility moves from public health to the school system. Forsyth County Schools runs its preschool special education program under the name Sprouts, and a child can enter the process as their third birthday approaches, through the spring before they are age eligible for kindergarten. A pediatrician, childcare provider or private therapist can raise the concern, but the parent has to complete the Request for Child Find Assistance questionnaire and the registration to start the clock. Once consent to evaluate is signed, the district has 60 calendar days to complete its assessments.

Private therapy is not an alternative to either of those systems and we do not ask families to choose. Public programs are bound by eligibility rules written around educational impact, which means a child can be visibly struggling and still not qualify, or qualify for far less frequency than their goals need. Families come to us to start before a public evaluation is scheduled, to add frequency alongside school services, to cover disciplines the school does not provide, or to keep going through the summer. With your permission we will coordinate directly with a school therapist or a service coordinator so the two plans reinforce each other instead of pulling in opposite directions.
We see children from across Forsyth County at our clinic in Cumming. Nothing on this page is medical advice and none of it is a diagnosis. If something here sounds like your child, an evaluation is how you find out what is actually going on.

The clinic is on Friendship Circle just off Highway 20 in Cumming, which puts it within an ordinary weekday drive of anywhere in the county. Families coming up from the Windermere and Lambert corridor tend to book late afternoon; families coming from Coal Mountain and the north end usually find mid-morning easier. Our scheduling team knows the traffic patterns and will tell you honestly which slots work from where you live.
The transition from Babies Can't Wait to Forsyth County Schools is supposed to be planned in advance rather than happen on the birthday, and your service coordinator should start that conversation months ahead. Two things worth knowing: eligibility is re-determined under different rules, so qualifying for Part C does not guarantee qualifying for Part B, and there is often a gap between the last early intervention visit and the first school service. Families frequently start private therapy during that window specifically so progress does not stall.
Yes, with your written permission. School-based services and private therapy answer to different rules, and a school therapist is working toward educational access while we may be working toward a broader functional goal. When both sides can see each other's targets, the child gets one coherent plan instead of two partial ones.
For the evaluation itself, usually not. For insurance to pay, often yes, and it depends on your plan. Our administrative team verifies benefits before you commit to anything, so call 770-240-0163 and we will find out what your specific policy requires rather than guessing.
